Description
Japan Speaks was written in defense of Japan's invasion of Manchuria and set up of a puppet state. The introduction was by the then Prime Minister of Japan, demonstrating Kawakami’s status as a well-known international journalist. Kawakami argues that Japan recognized China’s national sovereignty and the Manchurian crisis was a defensive move—in response to China’s infringement of Japanese interests promised in previous treaties. It was not well received by the Chinese American community. He did however differ from Japanese intellectuals at the time—being concerned with how the incident would rebound onto the Japanese American community.
