The AAVMC's Diversity Community Reads is a program hosted on AAVMC Learn. The program is designed to promote stakeholder readership on texts exploring diversity issues in higher education and use those insights to improve diversity, equity and inclusion efforts within member institutions.
(Vet Med Educator, 2021). Past readings have included the topics of race, socioeconomic status and college admissions, and ableism in higher education.

"In an effort to promote recruitment, collaboration, and increased access and opportunity for underrepresented students, AAVMC has created the interactive map above featuring locations of colleges of veterinary medicine and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). The visualization shows existing relationships between colleges of veterinary medicine and MSIs, as well as the numerous MSI institutions where colleges, veterinary organizations and individual veterinary professionals can foster relationships that strengthen pathways to careers in veterinary medicine for underrepresented students."
The AAVMC's DiVersity Matters program works to help member institutions recruit and retain underrepresented persons as students, faculty, and staff members; share best practices and inspire and recognize programs in member institutions; and develop broader awareness throughout the profession and society about the need and value of creating diverse and inclusion environments.
Diversity and Inclusion on Air is a podcast launched by the AAVMC in 2015 with the aim to reach a wider audience with their diversity programming. Episodes cover a wide range of topics, and feature guests from veterinary and other professions.
The AVMA provides Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Courses that "explore a variety of issues related to diversity, intersectionality, and equitable treatment" (AVMA, 2021).
The Diversity Toolbox from Today's Veterinary Business is a monthly column written by Dr. Lisa Greenhill that discusses issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in veterinary medicine, and provides tips for how to incorporate DEI into the workplace.
The Gender Identity Bill of Rights from PrideVMC is a "minimum foundation to identify and eliminate discriminatory practices against transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals in the veterinary profession including educational and employment environments." The document details an individuals' rights to identity, names, pronouns, privacy, gender expression and affirmation, advocacy, safety, and information; as well as protections from discrimination and harassment.
Journey, from the Veterinary Medical Association Executives (VMAE), is a guide for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in veterinary medicine. It consists for four stages with videos and readings meant to educate and empower the viewer in "becoming a more effective leader, a more visible ally, and a more articulate voice on why advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion is critical to the future of the veterinary profession."
U of I Scholarships
- The David Kieltyka Endowed Scholarship: "Dr. Kieltyka, a 1978 graduate of the [veterinary] college, created this scholarship for students with financial need are active in an LGBT organization or otherwise make a contribution to an accepting and diverse environment at Illinois."
- The Hadley Family Diversifying Opportunity in Veterinary Education (DOVE) Scholarship: "Dr. Stephen (Illinois DVM Class of 1987) and Mrs. Denyse Hadley and their six children established this scholarship for students from underrepresented populations and those who have shown a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion."
- The Michael McElvaine Scholarship: "Dr. McElvaine, a 1976 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine, was the founding president of the Lesbian and Gay Veterinary Medicial Association (now known as PrideVMC) in 1994. A scholarship in his memory is awarded to a student with a demonstrated record or strong potential in support of LGBTQ activism."
