James Vaky (1911-2012) was a member of the Class of 1933. He initially studied music, but graduated with a degree in Education. James played in the band, and he was a member of the Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity. Also, he won the Poetry Prize.
Jarvis Rich works as a computer programmer in San Francisco. As an undergraduate, he played the banjo and fiddle and became involved with the Campus Folksong Club as a freshman after meeting Vic Lukas at a Student Activities exhibition in the Union. He served as Chairman of Folksings and Master of Ceremonies at CFC events. After a long hiatus from music, he has taken up playing again, and now plays with the Babar Jug Band in the San Francisco Bay area.
Jay Walsh, Vice President for Economic Development and Innovation at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Oral history conducted for inclusion in the COVID-19 Documentation Project, a collaboration between the University of Illinois Archives and the University of Illinois System.
Jean Hurt Maury (1924-2011) came to Illinois in 1942 and worked for the Daily Illini as an editor during the war when it briefly had an all-female managing staff. She witnessed the tremendous involvement of the military on campus, became involved in the women's ROTC, and recalled the reaction to FDR's death in 1945 near the end of the war.
Jean Lattan (1909-2002) was a member of the Class of 1932. He received a scholarship to the U of I and majored in Engineering and Mathematics. Jean said that he did not especially notice the effects of the Great Depression, but he worked as a waiter during college. Also, Jean was a member of the Glee Club and he was the Student Colonel.
Jean Peabody Taylor (1914-2009) was a member of the Class of 1935. She graduated with a degree in Accounting, but retrained to be a teacher. Jean worked throughout college and lived at home.
