Local Ways to Get Involved
The Sustainable Student Farm (SSF)
"The SSF was founded in 2009 to serve the University of Illinois and local community. The farm offers tours of the farm and workshops on topics relating to organic and sustainable agriculture to all members of the campus and local community. To schedule a tour contact us below! We host an annual Field day in September featuring great food from dining services and tours of our farm."
"Local Harvest connects people looking for good food with the farmers who produce it. Buying local is about enjoying real food, grown yourself or purchased from people you trust. It's about developing strong local economies and producing food on a human scale. It's about eating seasonally, practicing the art of cooking, and sitting down to enjoy meals together. It requires ample local and regional producers, processors, and distributors. As we see it, the goal of the local food movement is to create thriving community-based food systems that will make high quality local food available to everyone."
Campus Initiatives
Sudent Sustainability Commitee
"The Student Sustainability Committee or SSC is a group of undergraduate and graduate students dedicated to building a more sustainable Illinois campus. With the partnership of a team of staff and faculty members, SSC allocates $1.1 million annually toward the development and seed-funding of projects that have an environmental impact on the university community."
Illinois Sustainable Technology Center
"ISTC integrates applied research, technical assistance, and information services to advance efforts in the areas of pollution prevention; water and energy conservation; and materials recycling and beneficial reuse."
Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment
"With the world population projected to increase to 8 billion by 2023 — and to considerably more than that by 2100 — the Institute is purposed to find solutions for the ever-growing demand for food, water, and energy while ensuring a safe, productive, and sustainable environment for all global citizens."
